BOSTON – It was just one game but it was an ugly one for the St. Louis Cardinals, who will be looking to bounce back from last nights 8-1 defeat to the Red Sox in the World Series opener. A lot will be asked of Cardinals rookie starter Michael Wacha, especially with the apparent reemergence of David Ortiz as a potent offensive threat for the Red Sox. Heres a closer look at tonights game. GAME TWO PREVIEW: PITCHING MATCHUP Cardinals RHP Michael Wacha (Regular season: 4-1, 2.78, 1.098 WHIP in 64.2IP; Playoffs: 3GS: 3-0, 0.43, 0.571 WHIP in 21IP) Wacha has never faced the Red Sox or any of Bostons hitters. LINEUP CONSIDERATIONS The Cardinals will make a decision on Carlos Beltrans availability after he takes part in warm up drills and baseball activities this afternoon. Beltran badly bruised the right side of his rib cage crashing into the right field wall while he robbed David Ortiz of a second inning grand slam. Beltran finished the inning in the field but did not return in the third. If Beltran cant play, the Cardinals offence takes an obvious hit. Even if Beltran is in the lineup, he wont be 100 per cent, which will render St. Louis with two hitters in the heart of its order playing under less than ideal conditions. Allen Craig, St. Louis first baseman/designated hitter, went 1-for-4 in Game 1, his first action since spraining his foot on September 4 in Cincinnati. Well see how Craig performs throughout the series but its asking a lot of a player to immediately find his timing and be productive batting in the clean up spot. Red Sox RHP John Lackey (Regular season: 10-13, 3.52, 1.157 WHIP in 189.1IP; Playoffs: 2GS, 2-0, 3.00, 1.167 WHIP in 12IP) Only two Cardinals have ever faced Lackey (Carlos Beltran, Matt Holiday) and neither have a hit in 16 combined at-bats. LINEUP CONSIDERATIONS David Ortiz, held to just two hits in the ALCS (granted one, his Game 2 grand slam, was very important) had as many hits in the World Series opener. He could have had one more but he was robbed of a second inning grand slam by Carlos Beltran. Ortiz singled in the fifth and then hit a two-run home run in the seventh. Bostons 3-4-5 hitters (Dustin Pedroia-Ortiz-Mike Napoli) went 5-for-12 in the game with five RBI and four runs scored. If Ortiz is indeed heating up, the Red Sox are in good shape to win this series. GAME TWO PREDICTION The Cardinals play much better, this is if they stop kicking around the baseball, but the Red Sox get to Michael Wacha and prevail, 5-3, to take a 2-0 series lead to the Midwest. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Kevin Loves 3-point shooting is opening up things for Minnesotas offence and Timberwolves took advantage Sunday, notching their first victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in almost four years. Love had 30 points and nine rebounds, the Timberwolves hit a season-high 12 3-pointers and Minnesota beat the Grizzlies 101-93, snapping Minnesotas 11-game losing streak to Memphis. Love, who connected on all but one of his nine 3-pointers in Friday nights loss to San Antonio, was 11 of 21 from the field Sunday, including 4 of 8 from outside the arc as Minnesota converted 12 of 26 from long range in winning for the third time in four games. Minnesota had made 11 3-pointers six times this season, including in Friday nights loss at San Antonio. "Its crazy," reserve guard J.J. Barea said of Loves offence. "It opens up the drive for everybody. Everybody else can play freely. You know they are going to have to pay attention the rest of the game to him." Nikola Pekovic scored 19 points, while Barea had 15, hitting 3 of 5 from outside the arc. Ricky Rubio finished with 12 points. Mike Conley led the Grizzlies with 28 points before leaving with just under 4 minutes to go with a bruised left thigh. Zach Randolph had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Jon Leuer scored 15, and Jerryd Bayless added 14 as Memphis lost its third straight. Conley was listed as day to day after the game. It was the latest in a spate of injuries for Memphis, which has lost starting centre Marc Gasol and reserve swingman Quincy Pondexter indefinitely. Tony Allen and Ed Davis just returned from missing several games apiece with injuries. That has left the Grizzlies trying to work their way through makeshift lineups to find a defensive identity. "I dont think it is frustration," Allen said. "Its all about getting it together and practice. We just have to keep sticking to the things thatt pretty much gained our notoriety.ddddddddddddquot; Memphis made several runs at Minnesota in the fourth quarter, cutting the Timberwolves lead to 95-92 when Randolph scored inside with 2:27 left. But Pekovic converted four straight free throws to create the cushion that led to the victory. "The last 3 minutes, we really executed and played good defence," Pekovic said, adding "that was the difference" from Fridays loss to the Spurs. The Timberwolves relied on their 3-point shooting, led by Love and Barea, to carry a 56-46 lead into the break. Love had 19 points, connecting on 7 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 5 from outside the arc. Barea hit all four of his shots in the half, including a trio of 3-pointers for 13 points. "When you get down 20 in the first half, you are exerting a lot of energy to fight back," Leuer said. "Nobody quit, and we did fight back." Conley scored 15 of his points in the third quarter to help Memphis cut into the lead, but Minnesota clung to a 77-73 advantage entering the fourth. Memphis was within 81-79 with 9:19 to play, when a flagrant foul on Davis changed momentum. Davis was called for the foul on a fast-break drive by Alexey Shved, and on the shot, Kosta Koufos was called for goal-tending. Shved hit the ensuing free throw, and when the Timberwolves got the ball, Pekovic was able to convert a pair of free throws and Minnesota had an 86-79 lead. "That was huge," Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman said of the swing. NOTES: Minnesotas last win over the Grizzlies was Feb. 6, 2010. The Timberwolves last win in Memphis was Jan. 6, 2009. ...
